Jocelyn Chia and her ‘artistic license’
BY: COLIN GOMEZ
The past couple of weeks has witnessed an outpouring of outrage and anger and hatred by many Malaysians towards Singaporean comedian Jocelyn Chia over her insensitive jibe over the mysteriously missing MH370 airplane.
Malaysians are astounded and stunned by Jocelyn’s wisecrack and consider the incident as insensitive and lacking tact and consideration towards the families of the victims of the MH370 disappearance.
The incident which happened in a performance in the United States didn’t appear to ruffle Americans who subscribe fully to freedom of speech and consider that Jocelyn had an artistic license.
But a word of caution as everything in life has its limits and though Jocelyn has an artistic license there is no such thing as freedom of speech without limits as it leads to decadence and taking on extremism.
Jocelyn was extreme as she cracked her joke about the missing MH370 and really owes an apology to the families of the victims and she shouldn’t hide behind America’s liberty without limits as it is not within the purview of her artistic license.
It is knowing the limit to everything that keeps an artistic license in perspective otherwise it veers into the direction of sheer madness and the outbreak of bedlam, anarchy and mayhem if there are no limits imposed on a comedian’s artistic license.
