Malaysia fast becoming a unique nation

BY: AKMAL AZIZ
The struggle for independence, or Merdeka, from the British colonialists witnessed the three major races of that era, the Malays, the Chinese and the Indians fighting fiercely and hard to wrestle power away from the British crown.
This resulted in Merdeka on August 31, 1957 and six years of negotiations and discussions took place before Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah formed Malaysia in 1963 having the inclusivity of different ethnic and tribal groups.
While Singapore departed from the set up in 1965 to form their own country on August 9, what transpired after this was an evolutionary process with migrant workers, refugees and expatriates coming into Malaysia.
Over the years and decades of evolution since the formation of Malaysia, there now is evidence widely available that the nation has become unique in nature and a melting pot for cross-cultural ties across the world.
Not only are there Malaysian Malays, Chinese and Indians but Bangladeshis, Filipinos, Indonesians, Myanmarese, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Syrians, Palestinians that the country looks more like a mini United Nations.
Whether this augurs well remains to be seen, but what is taking place for sure is that the nation is beginning to forge a new, universal identity and has become a showcase of multiculturalism that it’s anyone’s guess how the country will be like in future.
