A wise man once stated that “if you lose some money, you lose something of value. But if you lose your character, you lose everything” and this is why building character in people should be a top priority in everybody’s life.

In Malaysia, the ugly Malaysian can be found everywhere, people who do not behave well and who give trouble and create problems and issues for everyone else due to their bad character which is common nowadays.

As a result character education must be made compulsory for all school going children to study and understand as there is very obviously an increase in social ills, bad behaviour and other kinds of ugly character displayed.

By studying what it means to have good character among schoolchildren, they grow up creating a new society where they display exemplary character which would cause and create peace, harmony and goodwill among the people.

Preferably, good character education must be taught throughout nursery to tertiary, in the private and public sector and this means a large mass of people including housewives and retirees should have access to learning how to behave well.

The Madani government should draw up a syllabus specially tailored and suited to teaching about good character drawing resource material from different faiths and religions and also from authors and writers who specialise on the education of a person’s character.
