The Missionaries of Charity of Calcutta, India, was founded by Mother Theresa, later Saint Theresa, and was instrumental in feeding the poor and housing the homeless who were to be ubiquitously found in the city.

The work of the Albanian nun gained world recognition and the Nobel Prize for Peace was awarded to her for the sterling work she and her fellow nuns were doing on the streets of Calcutta helping everyone regardless of race and religion.

This was one of the most profound statements made by Saint Theresa: “One act of kindness can change the world,” and this woman was a living example of giving to the poor and feeding the poor which won her admirers from people all over the world.

Mother Theresa lived a life of sacrifice and she worked hard and never knew the meaning of the word fatigue because she slept and rested little but every waking hour of her life was spent with people who needed her help and assistance.

Imagine if all of us Malaysians started to do acts of kindness. It might not be on the magnitude or scale of Saint Theresa but by us just buying a meal for a person who cannot feed themselves it would make this country a haven or paradise.

Instead of turning our backs on the poor, the needy and the homeless, let us instead seize the opportunity to do good to our neighbour though the person may be a total stranger and this will pave the way to spread happiness and well being.
