In any recession or economic downturn, small businesses and enterprises are the worst affected and, therefore, it is of critical importance that Malaysians learn to support and encourage them not to give up during these hard times but to prevail.
This is easier said than done. But there must be the impetus and motivation given to encourage the businesses that are operating on a minor or minimal budget and to help them survive and prosper in the current global recession.
If there is no support or patronising of the goods and services provided by small businesses, they would undoubtedly have to fold, and this is not a good sign for them and also for the well being and economy of the nation.
Life is hard and difficult for traders and businesses that have small operating capital, and most of them dig deep into their pockets, their savings, or borrow from family, relatives and friends just to keep going in business.
The government must closely watch, monitor and supervise these groups of businesspeople and ensure things turn out right for them by registering all these businesses and helping in the marketing and promotions of their products and services.
While small businesses might not be seen as having any impact on the economy, this is really a fallacy, as collectively they contribute a sizable source of revenue earnings in the country because of their sheer numbers.
