Based on encouraging indications from West Asia leaders, Malaysian prime minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed ‘earnest optimism’ the end of the US-Iran crisis and the reopening of the Straits of Hormuz is possible soon.
Anwar was online and on the phone with West Asia leaders, where Iran is located, and stated that negotiations for a peaceful settlement to the US-Iran war and the re-opening of the Straits of Hormuz were progressing on a positive trajectory.
Anwar expressed hopes that the constructive roles being played by the leaders of Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and the United Arab Emirates, which are progressing smoothly, will begin to yield results.
He took cognizance of the fact that the United States president, Donald Trump, in cooperation with Islamic countries, was personally engaged in pursuing a negotiated outcome and hoped all parties would seize the opportunity for a successful conclusion.
Anwar further stated that Malaysia stands committed to support any multilateral effort that contributes to lasting peace and stability in West Asia and urged all parties to come to an inclusive framework agreement.
West Asia consists of 18 to 20 countries including Iran, overlapping with the Middle East and spanning from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf which is now suffering from disruptive global supply chains because of the closure of the Straits of Hormuz.
