Malaysians who carry umbrellas from their homes are in a quandary. They are not sure if they are going to use the umbrella to ward off the scorching heat or whether the umbrella will be needed to protect and cover them from sudden thunderstorms.
This uncertainty prevails and is expected to continue until June 2026 if predictions by MetMalaysia is to be followed. But the effects of global warming and climate change are wreaking havoc on daily weather in the country.
So far TMV has confirmed reports received of 15 persons in heat-related cases, 3 sufferers of heatstroke and a death due to the heatwave which has made many Malaysians wake up as temperatures are expected to soar above 40 degrees celsius.
Those most vulnerable to the current heatwave are babies and children, seniors and those suffering from chronic health and medical ailments or those who are in the high risk group of which there are many individuals.
Useful advice has been pouring in asking people to wear a cap, hat or use an umbrella and to drink about ten glasses of water to keep themselves hydrated and to avoid outdoor activities unless deemed necessary.
If symptoms such as fever, dizziness, headache and nausea persist in an individual, ask the person to consult a doctor, and try wearing loose, bright clothing and stay in shady areas or where there is air-conditioning like shopping malls.
