If the Madani government, the government of the day, is more realistic in facing up to criticism and dissent, instead of going for the jugular of those with opposing views, it will go a long way in ensuring peace and harmony.
Malaysia, as a nation, must strive to be a healthy democracy. For this to happen, dissent and criticism must be able to be voiced out openly but in accordance with observing decorum, the rule of law and civility.
If this is not allowed, it will result in a backlash, where those with grievances vent their frustration, anger and resentment without considering the repercussions to themselves of having violated the laws of the land.
This is where the government must educate and create awareness of what criticism people can level, and not only this, but also how to go about it by going through the proper channels which will be an appeasement for everyone.
Instead of stoking tensions in the country and threatening national security, Malaysians of all walks of life should be level headed and understand that there are avenues and opportunities for them to express themselves.
But freedom of expression must not be used as a licence to create provocation, unrest and unhealthy sentiments among Malaysians but it must be moderate in tone and nature which will be good enough to get a person’s dissent across.
