The SCORE Marathon 2026 is poised to make history after attracting 50,000 participants ahead of its scheduled run in Putrajaya on July 18 and 19.
For the first time since its inception, the annual race will be staged over two days, reflecting its rapid growth and rising popularity among local and international runners. Organisers said the overwhelming response could see the event earn recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records.
The expanded edition will feature four competitive distances — 42 kilometres (km), 21km, 10km and 5km — catering to elite athletes as well as casual runners.
Chief Executive Officer of SCORE Sports Management, Patricia Tan, described the milestone participation as a testament to the marathon’s steady evolution since it began as a modest community event in 2014.
“We started as a small-scale community run, and today it has grown into one of the largest running events in the country. Reaching 50,000 participants is a significant achievement for us,” she said.
Tan added that the organisers aim to position the marathon as an inclusive platform for runners of all levels to test their limits. Special categories such as the Double Challenge and High Performance segments have been introduced to raise competitiveness and engagement.
Under the Double Challenge category, participants may opt for one of four race combinations: 10km+42km, 5km+42km, 10km+21km or 5km+21km. The High Performance segment covers the 42km, 21km and 10km distances, targeting seasoned competitors seeking faster timings and rankings.
In a further boost to its prestige, the marathon will also serve as a qualifying platform for runners aspiring to compete in the World Marathon Championships.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of AIA Malaysia, Heng Zee Wang, expressed enthusiasm in continuing the company’s support as the event’s main sponsor for the fifth consecutive year.
“We are proud to remain part of this inspiring event, especially as it reaches the remarkable milestone of 50,000 participants. We hope initiatives like this will continue to encourage Malaysians to embrace healthier and more active lifestyles,” he said.
With its record-breaking turnout and enhanced race format, the SCORE Marathon 2026 is expected to further cement its standing as a premier fixture on Malaysia’s sporting calendar.
