Skywatchers will have the opportunity to witness a total lunar eclipse this evening, as the Moon takes on a striking reddish tint during a rare celestial alignment.
The phenomenon, commonly known as a blood moon, will commence at 7.04pm and last for approximately 58 minutes, according to the Agensi Angkasa Malaysia (MYSA).
In a statement today, MYSA said the eclipse will reach its maximum phase at 7.33pm before concluding its total phase at 8.02pm.
The agency explained that a total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth positions itself directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth’s shadow to completely cover the lunar surface. During this alignment, sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere filters out shorter blue wavelengths, allowing red and orange tones to dominate — giving the Moon its characteristic coppery glow.
MYSA added that the total eclipse will be visible across East Asia, Australia, the Pacific region, North America and Central America. Observers in Central Asia and much of South America, however, will only experience a partial eclipse.
Separately, the Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) has called on Muslims to perform the recommended eclipse prayer in conjunction with the event.
In a statement shared online, JAKIM said the special prayer may be performed from the time of Maghrib until 9.17pm. Muslims are also encouraged to increase supplication and reflection as a sign of gratitude and awareness of Allah’s greatness during the phenomenon.
Weather permitting, the event is expected to attract astronomy enthusiasts and members of the public eager to observe the rare spectacle unfolding in the evening sky.
