A 29-year-old business owner from Nottingham briefly found herself listed as the ‘richest woman in the world’ after a coffee shop system error credited her with an astonishing £63 quadrillion, although only on paper and with strict limitations.

According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation, Sophie Downing received a £10 gift card as a Christmas present for local café chain 200 Degrees Coffee.

When she used the card to purchase a matcha latte at the outlet in Flying Horse Walk on Feb 12, she was surprised to discover that her remaining balance had surged to £63,000,000,000,000,000. The figure far exceeded the wealth of technology entrepreneur Elon Musk and was significantly larger than the value of the global economy.

“I thought it was hilarious. I’ve never seen anything like that before,” she was quoted as saying.

Downing said the cashier appeared visibly puzzled when the amount appeared on the register screen.

“The expression on his face was like, ‘What?’” she said, adding that she immediately sent a screenshot of the balance to her partner, who also found the incident amusing.

Despite her fleeting status as a paper trillionaire, Downing clarified that the sum could only be used at the specific coffee chain.

“I’m just enjoying being the richest woman in the world on paper while it lasts,” she joked, assuring that she had no intention of taking advantage of the technical error.

In a statement, a spokesperson for 200 Degrees Coffee explained that the discrepancy was caused by an administrative oversight.

“Due to a technical administrative error, the gift card number, rather than the card’s monetary value, was entered into the cash register system,” the spokesperson said.

The company has since acknowledged the mistake, effectively ending Downing’s brief moment as the world’s wealthiest woman on record.
