When Bloomberg released a report, after investigations by two of their correspondents based in Kuala Lumpur, they alluded to the fact that there was a ‘corporate mafia’ in existence within the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
This will mean that within MACC there are deep state operatives at work which must be investigated thoroughly so as not to cast aspersion on the anti-corruption commission which has seemingly been busy convicting the corrupt.
Given this scenario, it is important to understand that an internal probe or task force headed by the chief secretary to the government will have difficulty getting to the bottom of the truth and the findings can easily be disputed.
Any probe or investigation must not be conducted by the government on its own officials but by an independent panel of experts or a third-party to ensure complete openness, transparency and integrity.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in defending the MACC Chief Commissioner by stating that his contract was renewed several times owing to his ‘extraordinary courage’ in combating corruption is now at a loss of words.
This accusation or allegation of misdeeds and abuse of power by the MACC Chief Commissioner strikes at the heart of the organization and also raises doubts and questions about other law enforcement agencies creating a destabilising effect on Malaysia.
