Questions are swirling in government, in political and legal circles over the ownership of shares by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Azam Baki in a couple of companies causing the hearts of Malaysians to sink in despair over allegations of corruption.
In recent years, Azam Baki has been the target of accusations of misdeeds and abuse of power and has even been singled out in a ‘Tangkap Azam Baki’ rally which has done no good to his image as the chief graft buster.
While Azam Baki has denied any wrongdoing and it is not unlawful to be a shareholder, the pertinent question asked is how could he afford to acquire these shares when he is only a senior government servant.
The shares owned by him do not commensurate with his earnings, it does not tally, and to Malaysians something is not right and it is suggested that he go on garden leave to give him an opportunity to clear his name.
While so far no concrete evidence is available to throw the book at him, these allegations and accusations have done a lot of damage to his reputation and the integrity of the commission which makes corruption more widespread than believed.
Not only that, this new scandal of allegations of corruption has thrown a spanner in the works of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who now faces even more daunting challenges to combat corruption and bring about real reforms.
