The Sultan of Selangor has handed down a decisive mandate that there is to be no pig farming in the state of Selangor as it poses serious environmental risks, including foul odours and the contamination of rivers from pig waste.
In a statement from the Selangor Royal Office, His Royal Highness proposed that the state government look into options and alternatives to swine farming and suggested companies being given licences to import pork.
His Highness stated that this approach would not only resolve the long-standing pig farming issue but enable the state government to optimise the use of land for development, housing and to be put to other productive use.
The Sultan of Selangor, while aware of the pork supply needs of the non-Muslim community, stated that large-scale and small-scale pig farming is unsuitable for the state owing to limited land resources.
The Sultan stated that even if pig farming can be managed through modern farming methods, the large financial outlay and investment are unlikely to bring much profit to the operators of these farms supplying pork in Selangor.
His Highness also stated that the pig farming issue in the state should be considered resolved and his decision was made after consultation with his advisors and the decree was necessary to maintain peace and harmony in the state.
