Malaysian Integrity Institute member, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stated that the spate of exposure of corruption scandals involving public officials and institutions has shaken the confidence of Malaysians and their trust in public service.
Tan Sri Lee stated that corruption in any form undermines the principles of fairness, justice and good governance and it erodes the public trust essential for a democracy to function besides stifling economic progress and social cohesion.
He said these scandals have not only cast a shadow over our public officials and public institutions and for many Malaysians it has led to frustration, cynicism and a sense that corruption and graft have become systemic.
Tan Sri Lee stated that he recognised the pain and disappointment felt by ordinary citizens who expect transparency, honesty and ethical conduct from their leaders. “Trust once lost is hard to regain.”
In order to address the root causes of corruption, Tan Sri Lee advised using a comprehensive multi-pronged approach which includes strengthening legal and institutional frameworks, empowering and safeguarding the MACC.
He stated that Malaysia must also review and tighten laws relating to conflicts of interest, public procurement, asset declaration and political financing to plug the loopholes currently that enable corrupt practices.
