Anwar lays down the rules for government officials

Malaysian prime minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a serious warning to those in leadership and enforcement positions, giving them a week to clean up their act against smuggling, corruption and abuse of power.

If they fail to do so, they will have to step aside as Anwar stressed the critical need for integrity, accountability and bold, decisive action which is a matter of national interest as the rakyat expects the government to have credibility.

Anwar acknowledged that although various agencies made strides in managing financial, economic and enforcement matters, there were still those who adopted a ‘tidak apa’ or couldn’t care less attitude and approach in the course of their work.

Anwar stated that although he appreciates the success of most civil servants, there must also be an assessment of areas that need improvement and urged everyone to not only examine their strengths but also their weaknesses.

He stated that while Malaysia is fortunate to have many competent civil servants and enforcement officers, there are still niggling issues which must be addressed such as smuggling, illegal activities and the lapses which continue to persist in enforcement.

Since Malaysians want to witness genuine change and reforms, Anwar gave a one-week grace period and if government servants feel unable to take bold action they are to step aside and make way for others more capable to take their place.
