Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has apologised and retracted his statement made towards a journalist during the pre-launch of the ‘I Lite U’ lighting project in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, recently.

Kor Ming, who is also DAP Deputy Chairman, said he accepted with an open heart all the feedback and criticism directed at his remark and expressed regret over any misunderstanding or offence it may have caused among members of the media.

“Regarding the misunderstanding at the Bukit Bintang Lighting Programme, I accept all feedback with an open heart. If any media friends felt offended by my words, I retract them and sincerely apologise, so that we can all stay focused on rebuilding our beloved nation,” he said at a press conference after officiating the MADANI Park in Taman Bukit Bak, Ipoh.

Kor Ming also reaffirmed his respect for media practitioners and their freedom of expression in carrying out their duties.

“I have the utmost respect for members of the media and their freedom of speech. The media plays a vital role in communicating government policies and initiatives to the people,” he said.

A video clip showing Kor Ming responding firmly to a reporter’s question during the ‘I Lite U’ pre-launch (which used an English name) recently went viral, sparking public debate and criticism from various quarters.

The incident also drew reactions from the National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJM) and the Centre for Independent Journalism (Geramm), both of which viewed the minister’s remarks as inappropriate coming from a member of the administration.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Kor Ming reiterated his apology and expressed appreciation for the media’s continued support, describing them as strategic partners in disseminating information and fostering public understanding of the initiatives by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).

“I accept all feedback with humility and hope the good relationship between the ministry and the media will continue to strengthen so that we can jointly uphold the nation’s dignity,” he added.
