Malaysia has earned worldwide acclamation by clinching the Global Zero Waste Special Citation Award, the top honors from the Zero Waste Foundation for its leadership and innovation in sustainable waste management and circular economic practices.

In a statement, the Housing and Local Government ministry which received the award stated it reflects Malaysia’s ongoing drive to transform urban waste management, promote environmental stewardships and foster innovative, sustainable solutions.

The ministry pledged to build a sincere and meaningful partnership with the foundation under the UN mandate saying Malaysia would help advance these principles globally, across the Asia-Pacific region and throughout Asean.

The Ministry explained that Malaysia’s sustainability milestones include recycling centres, ‘Trash to Cash’ initiatives and the Circular Economy Blueprint 2025-2035, which promotes producer’ responsibility, digital waste tracking and green technology hubs.

The nation has also successfully transformed old landfills into Lestari Parks – community spaces powered by renewable energy – and operates Kuala Lumpur’s AI-powered waste transfer station that handles 2,500 tonnes daily.

Also, through the annual ‘Hari Cuci Malaysia’ campaign, modelled after the UN World Cleanup Day, more than 100,000 volunteers have joined forces to break five national records since its launch last year.
