Good governance measures important for the financial market

Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that good governance is both a strategic asset and a pillar of credibility in the financial market and assured that the government is ready to deliver on its promises.

He conveyed this message while officiating at the Asian Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditors Conference 2025 that it is in this spirit that his Madani government was pursuing wide-ranging reforms nationwide.

Part of these reforms includes strengthening the mandate of the National Audit Department led by the Auditor-General by making an amendment to the Audit Act which is being done for the first time in 33 years.

The government has also set up a serious irregularities committee to act swiftly on critical breaches which means public officials would be held accountable for offences as public funds come under their watch.

Anwar stated that since 2024, follow-up audits have already managed to recover and safeguard RM159 million which is considered a step in the right direction in curtailing the abuse of the management of public funds.

Besides this, he added that new auditing guidelines will be implemented by the National Audit Department to any entity receiving public funds and this ‘follow-the-public-money’ approach would help curb leakages and corruption.
