Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who brokered a ceasefire between the fighting military powers of Thailand and Cambodia came in for praise and appreciation from different parts of the world.

Anwar was quick to nip the problem in the bud before it festered and got out of control and it was also a reflection of the strength of ASEAN’s convening power in safeguarding peace and stability within the region.

He stated that by upholding the Asean Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, the peace dividend can be strengthened among member countries by maintaining a community of trust, mutual respect and shared prosperity.

Anwar successfully mediated an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after a special meeting held in Malaysia’s administrative capital of Putrajaya which drew international attention and praise for the nation.

Anwar reiterated that the brokering of peace is really a reminder of the qualities which have kept the region in peace – patience, trust and steady diplomacy – which gives meaning to ASEAN’s centrality and unity.

He stated that he has consistently underscored the theme of ASEAN’s centrality, unity and autonomy as a compass for the collective journey ahead for the region in the face of shifting global dynamics.
