Sales of banned products online gaining momentum

by | Jun 23, 2025 | National, News

A high-level meeting of top officials in the country is set to take place as the government now embarks on efforts to crack down on the online sale of banned products, especially vape liquids that have traces of narcotics.

There appears to be inadequate control over illegal products being sold openly online and this is why the Communications Ministry is arranging for the meeting involving the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and Health ministries.

Other minority stakeholders will also be invited for the pow-wow and whatever is decided upon at the meeting the outcome is to be presented to the Federal Cabinet for appropriate action to be taken against sellers or the platforms that conduct these sales.

There are also changes to be made to the Online Safety Bill, as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission considers all feedback and input from stakeholders to finalise a draft of the regulations to be enforced in the Bill.

Once these measures are finalized, a regulatory committee set by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), will be formed and empowered with the oversight capacity to see to the implementation of the Bill.

All stakeholders have been requested by the Communications Ministry to be compliant as the process for the Online Safety Bill is expected to take place by next month as the Prime Minister’s Department needs time to undertake a thorough study.
