Whether anyone likes it or not, it is without a shred of doubt now that Malaysians are living in a dog eat dog world, and in this environment, there is very little room left for being courteous towards vulnerable groups, the marginalised and disadvantaged.

Civility is something that is needed to be expressed by everyone to show that as human beings, there is a separation from animal behaviour, because of the intelligence possessed by us and the ability to think and reason.

In this age of reason, respect and reverence should automatically be shown towards the graying population, the seniors and elderly among us who, over a lifetime, have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with others.

Seniors and elders have evolved over decades, and in the process, they have developed refined skills and abilities, which if anyone is prudent and wise enough, they should tap into this treasury to benefit enormously, especially youth.

There is a need not only for youth, but children, and the middle aged group, to consider receiving counsel and advice from seniors and elders who have been through the mill and have undoubtedly survived and prospered.

It might even inspire us to follow in their footsteps, and their guidance and counsel on how to succeed in different ventures should help us gain valuable insight and this is why seniors and elders should be accorded due respect and reverence.
