Malaysia to head United Nations-Habitat Assembly

Malaysians can take great pride in knowing that the Election of Officers of the Bureau at the UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, that the nation has been elected as president of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme Assembly.

This appointment is for the 2026-2029 term and was duly received by Housing and Local Government Minister Mr Nga Kor Ming and the nation will also serve on the UN-Habitat Executive Board for the same period.

Mr Nga stated that as Malaysia takes on the role of the presidency, they plan to ensure their dedication and commitment to urban sustainability and to bridge global ambition along with local realities by strengthening multilateralism.

By helming the UN-Habitat, Malaysia is expected to witness a redoubling of efforts in implementing the New Urban Agenda and get the opportunity to set global priorities on sustainable city development and urbanisation starting next year.

Mr Nga added that the appointment is a significant recognition of the nation’s commitment to sustainable urban development with 53 percent of Sustainable Development Goals already being tracked at the local level.

The UN-Habitat Assembly is the United Nations highest decision-making body on sustainable urbanisation and human settlements and convenes every four years to set key priorities for the UN-Habitat’s work and operates in over 70 countries.
