MCMC to ensure a fair deal for telcos in 4G coverage

In a timely move, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is to ensure a fair deal for telecommunication companies (telcos) in 4G Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) which has been welcomed by them.

The ministry stated that although the nation has achieved an overall coverage rate of 98.70 percent nationwide in the first quarter of this year, coverage levels varied significantly among the telcos.

The ministry is to provide detailed reports showing both the national aggregate and individual telcos CoPA, state by state, to make sure that when Malaysians pay for Internet packages, they get nationwide access and not just for selected areas.

In order for 4G services to be widely available throughout Malaysia, MCMC has been actively working to promote network-sharing among telcos which has since been formalised through a recently published framework.

Other measures MCMC has undertaken is to introduce the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which will play a crucial role in holding social media platforms accountable for the content they host, to protect users from scams and online harm.

Another concern of MCMC is the lack of action by major social media platforms in tackling scams and gambling advertisements, despite these being paid content, just because scammers are paying for them.
