Everything You Need to Know About the New Implemented JPJePlate

by | May 7, 2025 | National, News, Wheels

Malaysia has taken a major step towards modernising its road transport system with the introduction of the JPJePlate — a standardised vehicle number plate system launched by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Initially rolled out for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, the JPJePlate aims to improve vehicle identification, safety, and digital integration on Malaysian roads.

What Is the JPJePlate?

The JPJePlate is a new government-mandated number plate system, made compulsory from 9 September 2024 for all newly registered battery electric and hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles. It is designed to support the nation’s growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem while paving the way for a fully digital, secure, and connected transportation infrastructure.

Key Features of the JPJePlate

This modern plate boasts several advanced features:

  • Distinct Design: The plate features a white background and a light green vertical stripe on the left side, representing zero-emission vehicles. It also includes the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) and the “MAL” code, denoting a Malaysian-registered vehicle.
  • Anti-Counterfeit Measures: To deter forgery, JPJePlates come equipped with holographic elements, anti-tamper foils, a QR code that functions as a digital signature, and a laser-etched serial number for verification.
  • Built-in RFID Chip: A key innovation is the embedded RFID (radio-frequency identification) chip, which allows seamless access to toll roads, parking systems, and future intelligent transport integration.
  • Durable Material: The plates are made from retro-reflective aluminium for better visibility, especially at night, improving road safety.

Availability and Implementation

Currently, the JPJePlate is mandatory only for new EV and hydrogen vehicle registrations. However, existing EV owners may voluntarily adopt the new plate from 9 November 2024 onwards. At this stage, only authorised car manufacturers and dealers are allowed to place JPJePlate orders through the official JPJePlate website. Each set costs RM98 and includes front and rear plates, a windshield RFID sticker, and anti-theft screws.

Looking Ahead

The JPJ plans to eventually expand the JPJePlate system to include all vehicle types, such as motorcycles, buses, and commercial lorries. This rollout is seen as a stepping stone towards a more secure, digital, and environmentally conscious transport future in Malaysia.
