While global superpower the United States did something bad to us Malaysians by imposing tariffs, this is not the be all and end all, and Malaysia should actually work around this issue with the Americans who are a leading trade partner.
Instead of getting hot under the collar over US president Donald Trump’s action, Malaysians should learn to keep their cool over these rash, impulsive and thoughtless tariffs imposed which should wane and eventually disappear.
Most analysts consider this imposition of tariffs as a passing phase which should blow over once Mr Trump comes back to his senses and everything should be once more back to normal and it would be business as usual with the Americans.
This is why it is important for Malaysia and Asean not to retaliate or engage in activities that are counter productive, instead the regional bloc should seek to strengthen ties with the Americans who are not going to disappear.
The United States is no pushover although China is busily flexing its muscles in a show of power, American dominance is traditional and long standing in the world unlike China who are the new kids on the block.
It should pay off well for Malaysia if it strengthens diplomatic and bilateral ties with the US and engages in trading with the Americans in the pursuit of a win-win situation where both nations profit and gain from each other.
