There is an emerging scenario of confusion and derision as handouts are being given by the Malaysian government to the rakyat which is breeding not only a sense of dependency but also complacency and neglect towards work ethics.
While the flagging economy is largely to be blamed for the scarcity of jobs and the rise in unemployment, the government’s approach seems to put some money in people’s hands just to tide them over is not seen as prudent and wise now.
This move should be a short term measure and not lead to a permanent solution as what people should do is to engage in meaningful occupation to derive a sense of satisfaction and to develop knowledge and skills by working.
This is a healthier, more wholesome approach, and handing out cash aid and coupons for essential goods must be only for those who are critically unable to fend for themselves and should not be a blanket decision for all Malaysians.
A healthy society should be a cross between a welfare state and a well managed human capital endeavor that does not result in slothful ways or laziness but Malaysians being strong, productive and useful in many ways.
The time is right and it is actually high time where every adult Malaysian learns to cherish and value the benefits of being employed and to work to be independent and self-sufficient and contribute to those who are really poor and needy.
