by | Apr 16, 2025 | National, News, World

In a show of Asean solidarity and as the Asean Chair holder, Malaysia is setting the example for member nations to come to the aid of Myanmar who are reeling under civil war and now devastated by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake.

Malaysia has already pledged financial aid to the victims and in the latest decision made by the government 35 medical officers from the Malaysian Armed Forces are set to be deployed to help set up and run a field hospital.

The MAF is waiting to obtain the green light of approval from the Myanmar authorities and the objective of setting up a field hospital is to provide orthopaedic and trauma treatment as well as emergency surgery for the earthquake victims.

Currently, discussions are underway with the Myanmar authorities and Malaysia has committed itself to conduct capacity-building for local healthcare teams as other countries also dispatch medical teams to help the victims.

Malaysia’s Health Ministry and the Malaysian Armed Forces are working together to set up the field hospital which is expected to have around 30 beds, operating rooms, X-Ray and other medical facilities.

The earthquake which struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025 has so far killed 3,689 people and left thousands injured while homes and property were destroyed leading to many people being homeless and 2 million people in acute need.
