In a show of unity and a celebration of getting together despite belonging to different communities, the Tamil, Malayalee and Sikh communities are celebrating their respective New Year’s – Chittirai Puthandu, Vishu and Vaisaki.
The Tamil New Year, also known as “Visuvaavasu” falls under the auspicious “krothi” year in the Hindu calendar and begins on the 30th day of the Tamil month of Panguni which will witness devotees celebrating at temples.
All Malaysia Malayalee Association or AMMA announced that Vishu signifies the start of the Malayalam calendar year and also symbolises renewal, prosperity and the preservation of the cultural heritage of Malayalees.
For Malayalee Hindus, a key element of their celebration is the Vishukkani which is a sacred arrangement featuring items presented such as gold, fruits, rice and holy texts placed before a shrine of Lord Krishna.
On the Sikh celebration of Vaisakhi, the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia announced that preparations are underway at about 130 gurdwaras nationwide which will feature lively and exciting activities.
Among the activities which will be featured are Kirtan Darbar (devotional singing), langar (community meals) and various programmes such as blood donation drives, health screenings and fun and games for the children.
