History books in Malaysia should promote inclusivity

Academics, educators and parents urge for a revision of history books used in schools, to not only foster national unity and the appreciation of the country’s multi-cultural heritage, but they should also emphasize the inclusivity of all races.

They collectively emphasise that there should be curriculum reforms and that these textbooks should be free of political influence and showcase the truth of the history of the entire country including Sabah and Sarawak and not just Melaka.

This group of history reformists stated that the study of history books must be with an open and impartial mind, and that the mistakes made in the past should serve as a learning curve, and for the nation to now move forward.

Concerns over the lack of representation by Malaysia’s diverse ethnic groups in history books have been a long standing issue and the reform of history books group states there should be a more accurate portrayal to foster national unity.

In a swift response, the education ministry acknowledged these concerns and has set up a special committee comprising reputable historians, experts and teachers to determine now the content that should be taught at various school levels.

The reformist group stated that teaching students about the struggles and sacrifices of different communities should not be construed as divisive in nature but essential for Malaysian students to be informed and equipped with the truth.
