AI to give healthcare industry a boost

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a prime facet of life and it has pervaded everything from retail, e-commerce, banking and financial services to supply chain, logistics, travel, real estate and now healthcare.
Malaysian prime minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared recently at the World Economic Forum that AI would enhance efficiency, help reduce wastage and adopt cutting-edge technology for improving public health.
Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Big Data (Aibig) stated that AI in healthcare involves advanced computing techniques, robust data infrastructure and machine learning algorithms to assist in patient care.
Aibig added that AI enables predictive analytics, personalised medicine and efficient diagnosis and prognosis which are important factors in building a proactive and preventive healthcare system in the country.
According to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s public health medicine department, AI has begun to play a key role in public health intervention through disease surveillance, outbreak response and healthcare systems management.
Healthcare experts, however, emphasised the importance of having ethical considerations as AI bias has arisen where training data lack diversity and therefore there is a need to ensure diverse, high quality datasets and openness and transparency.
