Ushering in the Year of the Snake

BY: LEANNE K
Chinese New Year is a cultural festival that is nowadays celebrated not only by the Chinese community but, in Malaysia, the Malays and Indians also participate in the celebrations which is the forerunner of other festivals for the year.
Chinese New Year actually kick-starts the celebration of other festivals like Hari Raya AidilFitri, Deepavali, Christmas and in Sabah Pesta Keamatan and the harvest festival of Gawai in Sarawak which are the major events in a year.
For the Chinese, this is the year of the wood snake and ‘feng shui’ experts comment that it is going to be a tricky year but also auspicious for business, education, matrimony and child bearing which is why the Chinese look forward to this year.
But besides this, there are other aspects of Chinese New Year that are also a major attraction like receiving ‘ang pows’, tossing ‘yee sang’ as high as possible to gain long life and prosperity and the giving of mandarin oranges or ‘kam’ (gold).
This is a time of enjoyment and merriment for everyone in the country, the Chinese, the Malays, the Indians, the migrant workers and refugees, the marginalised and disadvantaged groups and a time to show solidarity.
Other than celebrating, there is also the offering of prayers in temples and to receive the blessings of the God of Prosperity, lion dances and the lighting of fireworks and firecrackers to frighten the devil and ward off evil and ill.
