Regulate and monitor the use of traditional medicine

The Universiti Sains Malaysia Centre for Drug Research has proposed the establishment of a dedicated committee to oversee, regulate and monitor the approval and use of herbal medicines in the country.

The Centre suggested also the creation of a comprehensive directory of safe herbal remedies for public reference to empower consumers to make informed decisions and minimise the risk posed by unapproved remedies.

The Centre added that there is widespread availability of herbal products on online platforms, pharmacies, Chinese medicine halls and in drug stores but cautioned that they should not be used unless supervised by healthcare professionals.

The Centre called for awareness and health campaigns for Malaysians to highlight the risks associated with unregulated herbal products and to promote the importance of consulting medical professionals.

Herbs should also not be mixed with prescription drugs without professional guidance as they can trigger adverse reactions and there are also concerns about imported herbal medicines from markets or countries with poor quality control.

It is important to check for regulatory approvals and clear product labelling even from international sources as contaminants such as heavy metals and unapproved additives are often found in unregulated herbal products.
