Shortage of coconuts expected this Thaipusam

Hindu devotees may have to pay more to smash coconuts on Thaipusam Day which falls on Feb 11 this year as a shortage is expected due to adverse weather conditions which has led to a reduction in the supply of coconuts.
A Penang-based coconut supply shop disclosed to the media that the shortage of coconuts actually began in September last year due to prolonged rainy weather conditions which has affected coconut production.
However, the coconut supply shop stated that despite these conditions, demand is high and this has invariably led to a surge in prices this year to RM2.50 a coconut compared to last year when the price of a coconut was RM1.90.
The coconut supply shop proprietor revealed that last year he supplied 70,000 coconuts for devotees to celebrate Thaipusam but this year there has been a great reduction as only 30,000 coconuts could be supplied by his shop.
What this means is that coconuts will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis to ensure fairness and to prevent devotees of the Thaipusam festival from being disappointed and orders have already started to pick up.
Other coconut suppliers contacted around the country confirmed that the shortage of coconuts is nationwide and there are not even enough coconuts at present to meet the needs of temples for daily prayers.
