Important for Malaysians to preserve unity

The National Unity Ministry, in a statement released to the media, has urged all strata and segments of society to avoid doing anything or saying anything which may affect the cordial and healthy relations between the various races and religions.
The ministry pointed out that it was important for every Malaysian to be responsible and exercise tact and sensitivity, to not only preserve the peace and prosperity of the nation, but to get along well while being racially and religiously diverse.
The ministry was commenting on the recent incident where red paint was splashed at the KK Mart convenience store outlet located in Universiti Malaya which was linked to the controversial sale of ‘ham and cheese’ sandwich products.
While there are various probes being conducted into the incident, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) confirmed that the ‘ham and cheese’ sandwiches did not have a halal certification.
The ministry called on all Malaysians to be calm and not to blow the situation out of proportion but to give time and space for the investigation process to be carried out by the PDRM, Jakim and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
In concluding their media statement, the ministry urged Malaysians to settle issues related to race and religion amicably and not let emotions run high or for leaders to go overboard by making provocative and uncalled for remarks.
