Better protection for Persons with Disabilities

A mob assault of a Person with Disabilities (PwD) at a market in Chukai, Kemaman in Terengganu has prompted the OKU Rights Matter Project to seek amendments to Article 8 (2) to prohibit discrimination against PwDs.
The group stated that the amendments are essential to affirm that Malaysians, including PwDs, live free from discrimination and violence and they also urged the government to look into reviewing and updating the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008.
In the Chukai incident involving a PwD, which was broadcast on social media as a two-minute video watched by over 12 million viewers, a mentally ill man was beaten, dragged around and humiliated by several mobsters.
The incident erupted when the mentally ill man lost control of his motorbike and crashed into a food stall, causing noodles to spill onto the road, and the attackers poured noodle soup on the victim and kicked him in the face.
OKU Rights Matter Project stated that this attack on a PwD was not an isolated case and it gives a clear sign and indication of the widespread abuse and neglect faced by PwDs, including physical and sexual violence, bullying and inadequate legal protection.
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia stated that in any event the use of violence is never acceptable and declared that the level of brutality shown in this case was excessive, disturbing to Malaysians and dehumanising.
