Parents worried over rise in school bus fares

by | Jan 16, 2025 | National, News

Next month, after the Chinese New Year holidays, school bus fares are expected to increase as school children go back to school, and worried parents are seeking government intervention to help resolve the matter.

In line with the appeals of parents, the Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) has urged the relevant authorities to introduce subsidies, fare caps and other monitoring mechanisms to ease the burden on parents.

Fomca stressed that while the government is not involved in determining school bus fares, the arrangement being solely between the school bus operators and parents, it is timely for the authorities to act.

Fomca suggests tax reliefs be given or grants for school bus operators to offset operational costs such as fuel, wages and maintenance of vehicles to ensure a fair rate charged for students nationwide.

While understanding and empathising with school bus operators, Fomca stated that any fare hike should be fair and transparent and strike a balance between the needs of operators and the financial capacity of parents.

On Jan 8 this year, Gabungan Persatuan Bas Sekolah Malaysia announced that school bus fares are expected to increase by RM5 to RM10 per student for the upcoming 2025/2026 academic session after the Chinese New Year school holidays.
