Check on abuses of power by the authorities
BY: CHRISTOPHER FERNANDEZ
The perception by a growing number of Malaysians is that there is rampant and widespread abuses of power by authority figures while at the same time the rakyat feel helpless and lost as to what to do.
While perceptions are not facts, they, nevertheless, give a strong indicator of what Malaysians are going through and the people in authority who abuse their power know who they are and should not be in denial.
Whether these abuses of power is inclusive and an avenue to commit corrupt acts is a strong possibility and ministries, departments and agencies are currently engaged in a gamut of wide ranging mischievous activities.
It is important not to sweep this matter under the carpet, and instead there must be comprehensive checks conducted by law enforcement agencies in the country to get to the bottom of it and root out the menace.
But what complainants and whistleblowers are witnessing for letting the cat out of the bag is not protection but, instead, in many cases they are victimised which acts as a deterrent for those who wish to expose abuses of power.
In fact, the sentiment on the ground is that Malaysians feel that under the Anwar regime acts of abuse of power and corruption have become worse and this means that the electoral reforms promised are nothing more than lip service.
