Why the government suffers from a trust deficit
BY: LEANNE K
In Malaysia’s mix of politics, the rakyat have so often been betrayed and having to accept ‘janji kosong’ (empty promises) that there has emerged a culture of unbelief and a trust deficit being suffered by the government.
More and more Malaysians have become an unbelieving lot and it has not helped that the government of the day has failed to keep to general election reforms promised to secure the votes of voters.
In the same vein, there are many scandals and accusations of corruption being hurled towards top political leaders of the past and present which Malaysians are beginning to believe as there can be no smoke without fire.
The perception is strong that corruption is rampant and widespread and a growing number of Malaysians are beginning to think it is not just a case of a few black sheep but entire government departments and agencies being corrupt.
Malaysians suffer from the fatigue of being cornered into corruption and they feel helpless and lost as to how to counter this menace of corruption which is starting to eat away at the vitals of the nation.
To regain the trust and belief of the people, the Anwar administration must go to the ground to wipe out corruption as much as possible and restore the faith of the rakyat in democracy which is the mechanism to move the nation forward.
