Cyberbullying now a major concern
According to data released by the MCMC, it received 8,399 reports and complaints of cyberbullying or 27 cases daily from January to October 31, this year compared to 10 cases daily for the same period last year.
The alarming rise has prompted the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to intervene by urging organisations and individuals to protect vulnerable groups especially children and teenagers from online harassment.
Methods suggested by experts include to avoid responding immediately and to take screenshots and report such incidents to the relevant authorities, and limiting social media usage and seeking support from family and friends.
These experts contend that while social media has revolutionised how a person connects and shares information, it has also become a platform for harassment, abuse and hate speech in the country.
These experts also state that stronger enforcement, education and the promotion and display of empathy are needed to ensure social media remains a space for positive interaction rather than harm.
However, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced cybersecurity tools are emerging as powerful aids in the battle against cyberbullying and offer innovative solutions beyond traditional educational campaigns.
