UPSR and PT3 exams no longer relevant
Malaysia’s Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek, told a local daily that the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) are no longer relevant in assessing the performance of students.
Fadhlina Sidek stated that this is why the ministry is not keen on reinstating the UPSR and PT3, which were abolished in 2021 and 2022 respectively and to strengthen the school-based assessment system instead.
She stated that time and space will be given to the assessment system to function effectively as everything that involves education must reflect Madani values and especially the National Education Philosophy.
Fadhlina elaborated that selecting the assessment system is a more holistic approach, encompassing an overall focus on the development of students and not just concentrating on grades and examination scores.
Malaysia, according to her, is moving in line with the global education agenda and comparisons can be made with countries such as Finland, the United States, Germany, Canada, Norway, Japan, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
She also noted that the implementation of the assessment system in Malaysia is in line with the ‘Education 2030: Incheon Declaration and Framework for Action’ presented in 2015 at the World Education Forum in Incheon, South Korea.
