Days of Malayan tiger numbered

by | Oct 17, 2024 | National, News, SUSTAINABILITY

World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia or WWF Malaysia reckons there are less than 150 Malayan tigers in West Malaysia and the situation is described by them as a “national crisis” as the mighty tiger is losing in its fight with poachers.

This is based on comprehensive research and monitoring efforts which led to the first National Tiger Survey conducted in collaboration with the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan).

However, initiatives have been taken by WWF Malaysia’s Project Stampede and Rimau’s Menraq or Orang Asli community patrols to mobilise efforts to dismantle snares and alert authorities to protect tiger habitats from poachers.

Rimau is a non profit organization dedicated to protecting the Malayan tiger through anti poaching activities and stakeholder engagement but their task is daunting as the demand for wildlife through illegal trade is high.

WWF Malaysia stated that in addition to their combined efforts more needs to be done by policymakers and decision makers especially in strengthening legal frameworks, integrated conservation efforts and development planning.

Other measures sought by WWF Malaysia include rigorous enforcement and the updating of wildlife protection laws to address emerging threats including increasing penalties for wildlife crimes.
