Malaysia’s Ministry of Education is presently in a quandary as they are besieged by many comments, suggestions and feedback from people who want to see a much improved and better education system in the country.
There is that perpetual call by educationists, parents and teachers to put more emphasis on developing English language skills among students and these appeals won’t go away and instead they are set to stay.
While learning and developing and mastering English language skills is of paramount importance, there is also a need to boost the use of Bahasa Malaysia as the national language especially among non Malay students.
If the PISA scores of Malaysian students in the past are to be taken into serious consideration, then the nation’s schooling system can be considered to be in disarray and the education ministry has its work cut out for them.
Not only should the education system in Malaysia from nursery to tertiary be revamped, it must be subject to a major overhaul and the ministry and government must look into ways and means to upgrade the quality of learning experience for all students.
The government and the education ministry must quickly draw up a comprehensive master plan by getting input from all stakeholders in education to come up with a formula for success and to address the current ills facing students fairly and equitably.
