Exploring the Legacy of Shahnameh: A Cultural Exhibition in Malaysia

by | Oct 7, 2024 | Faces & Happenings

The Shahnameh, meaning “The Book of Kings,” is an epic poem composed by the Persian Tajik poet Ferdowsi around 1000 AD. This monumental work is a cornerstone of Persian literature, telling mystical tales and chronicling the pre-Islamic history of Iran. Recognized as a UNESCO heritage, the Shahnameh resonates deeply with nations that speak Persian and serves as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

In a significant cultural initiative, the Embassy of Tajikistan, in collaboration with the Pusat Pengajian Antarabangsa (PPAS) and the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia, has been hosting an exhibition and film screening centered around the Shahnameh at the Perpustakaan Raja Tun Uda in Shah Alam, starting October 7, 2024.

An opening ceremony held on the same date was officiated by YB Tuan Mohd Najwan bin Halimi – Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship EXCO for the state of Selangor. Also present was Prof. Dr. Maszlee bin Malik, Chairman of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) cum Deputy Chairman of Selangor Public Library Corporation Board of Directors, along with His Excellency Ardasher Saeedjaafar Qodiri, the Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan. YAM Tengku Sulaiman Shah Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj, the royal guest, was also there the grace the ceremony.

This exhibition which will last until 17th October 2024, promises to immerse visitors in the enchanting world of Persian mythology and history, specifically highlighting the poignant tale of Rustam and Sohrab.

For many in Asia, there can be a tendency to generalize or oversimplify perceptions of the diverse nations of West and Central Asia. A lack of understanding of their unique cultures, histories, and perspectives can lead to premature and often misguided conclusions about the geopolitical dynamics and conflicts within these regions.

The exhibition and film screening aims to highlight how Central Asian countries are reclaiming their identities after enduring various forms of colonial influence. It is also a kind gesture by the Tajikistan embassy in Malaysia by sharing their cultural history to people of Malaysia.
