Malaysia gets serious about cleanliness
In conjunction with World Clean Up Day, a total of 58,007 Malaysians took part in a 12 hour ‘gotong royong’ to clean 649 locations nationwide involving illegal dumps and street and drain cleaning on September 28, 2024.
This involved various levels of organisations, including state governments, local authorities, ministries, schools, fire stations, PR1MA Residences, PPR projects, public parks, neighbourhoods and Non Governmental Organisations.
It was a joint initiative by the Housing and Local Government Ministry, the Federal Territories Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall with strategic partners and cooperation from PR1MA Corporation Malaysia and Malakoff Corporation Sdn Bhd.
The ministry is aiming for entry into the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest, simultaneous participation nationwide in an event, the biggest waste collection, and the longest duration of a gotong royong lasting 12 hours from 8am to 8pm.
Their activities went beyond just picking up litter, they also aimed to cultivate a culture of environmental awareness, collective public cleanliness and to motivate and inspire Malaysians to do their part in maintaining cleanliness.
World Clean Up Day actually took place on September 20, 2024. But as a sign of their seriousness in being clean and hygienic, the authorities plan to make this cleaning affair a continuous programme and not a once in a year event.
