Recently, a highly controversial statement was made by the deputy minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture that the pristine island of Langkawi be an exclusive destination for Muslims which sparked an outcry in the country.

Immediately there were postings on social media platforms where Malaysians vented their anger and frustration at what was basically perceived by them to be a racist statement by the deputy minister.

However, his superior, the minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture quickly apologized for the gaffe by his deputy and stated that in Malaysia inclusivity and multiculturalism takes place over any race and religion ideology.

The apology was widely accepted with a huge sense of relief by all right thinking Malaysians and viewed as a broad and inclusive objectivity which will spur the growth of tourism on the island of Langkawi.

Others such as civic leaders, nongovernmental organizations and individuals voiced and expressed their full support and backing for the apology issued by the minister of tourism, arts and culture.

Not only the tourism industry, but every facet of Malaysian life must be free of racist values and there must be the promotion of mutual respect and understanding among the races and religions practised in the country.
