Environmental destruction in Cameron Highlands
BY: AKMAL AZIZ
The Sultan of Pahang has advised all parties involved to seriously look into the issue of environmental destruction in Cameron Highlands and stated that the pristine conditions of the hill station must be maintained.
The call by the Sultan follows numerous complaints of the fact that Cameron Highlands now is an overbuilt environment subject to much land clearing and tree felling that have caused the temperature to rise.
In current times, there are people residing on the highlands using air conditioners when the temperature rises and, not just due to global warming, other more important factors include the establishment of many illegal farms growing vegetables and flowers.
It looks like the governing authorities have lost control over the management of the highlands, or is there the spectre of corruption involved, or other factors where greed by all the stakeholders have become beyond control.
Whatever it is, this hill station, and others in Malaysia, which are British legacies are witnessing a state of destruction due to poor planning, short sighted thinking and the failure to think well into the future.
Cameron Highlands now is a pale shadow of its past history and suffers from much pollution, traffic jams, haphazard construction of apartments and buildings and absolutely no thought or consideration given to sustainable development.
