Time to discard archaic and obsolete laws

When the nation abolished the Draconian Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri or Internal Security Act, Malaysians of all walks of life heaved a huge sigh of relief, and the watching world applauded us for making the right decision.

But there are more laws that need to be repealed because they are archaic and obsolete in the world of today especially in a country trying to move from developing to advanced and developed status or a first world nation.

Aspirations are high in Malaysia to join the league of first world nations but before this can be realized and achieved there is a need to put in much hard work and industry for us to become a powerhouse or global power.

It has to begin by looking into quite a number of laws that are no longer relevant and are hanging like a millstone around the neck of this nation to be a stumbling block towards achieving the full tenets and obligations of democracy.

In legal circles, these laws that need to be abolished often crop up and there is a growing impatience on when these laws will be dismantled to allow Malaysia to become a free state savouring freedom and liberty.

Laws must exist for the general benefit and good of the people of a nation and if Malaysia does the right thing of taking down laws that no longer are needed it will reflect the maturity and wisdom of its leaders.
