Malaysians were previously familiar with rural poverty, and then there emerged the realization with the growth of major cities in the country, of acute urban poverty and now the newest concept is “multidimensional poverty.”

Malaysia’s Madani government, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, now recognises poverty as a complex issue beyond financial or economic metrics and looks to address abject poverty, infrastructure development and essential utilities.

In order for stakeholders to fully understand the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), they need to undergo the necessary training to successfully comprehend its structure, use and how it is applied in policy and decision making.

Eradicating poverty begins with training programmes based on the MPI to be developed to give individuals and organizations the knowledge, tools and capacities to tackle the complexities of poverty that goes beyond income generation.

A participant’s comprehension of multidimensional poverty ideas, and in their subsequent training where they are given tools for analysing and interpreting data should help them effectively use the MPI in policymaking.

This is why the MPI must be given much thought and consideration before being implemented and the collating of training material must be suited to the target audience and their roles in combating poverty.
