Najib suited for ‘house arrest’

BY: SITI ROSNI
Malaysians are now rallying for popular former prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak, to be immediately released from jail, after he was convicted of crimes, and to complete the rest of his sentence under ‘house arrest.’
Actually this is something the court should have looked into, once he was convicted, and in all fairness, the erstwhile prime minister should not have spent a day in jail although the charges over which he was convicted were serious.
The reason for this is because Najib is no ordinary individual and since this is the first time a prime minister has been convicted of a crime in this country he cannot possibly be sent to jail and languish among common criminals.
Obviously the authorities were clueless on how to go about placing Najib. Since he is a former prime minister, and privy to national secrets, being with hardened, common criminals can endanger the security of the nation.
Even now the prison authorities are in a quandary and he is housed separately from other prisoners and given round the clock security and protection so it is only logical for his safety and well being that he be placed under house arrest.
But it is really the nitty gritty details of this ‘house arrest’ for Najib that needs to be worked out but in the interest of justice this is really the usual and standard treatment accorded to paramount leaders of a nation around the world who are convicted of crimes.
